Nikki Glaser's 'Pope-ular,' notable firsts, and other highlights of the 2025 Golden Globes

The 2025 Golden Globes were full of momentous firsts.

The awards show, held at Beverly Hilton Hotel, Los Angeles on Jan. 6 (Philippine time) had its first-ever female solo host in comedian Nikki Glaser. Some of the winners also earned the coveted Globe for the first time.

From hilarious interactions between the brightest stars in the industry to emotional acceptance speeches, here are the highlights of the 82nd Golden Globe Awards.

Nikki Glaser’s “Pope-ular” performance 

Making her historic hosting gig memorable, Glaser delighted the audience with her “Pope-ular” performance, a hybrid of Conclave and Wicked reference.

Channeling Glinda in her shimmering pink dress and wand, paired with a pope hat, she sang, “Pope-ular, you’re gonna be pope-ular, I’ll teach you some catholic prayers." She then faked getting a phone call, saying, “Wait...this sucks? This whole thing sucks? I’m embarrassing myself in front of Elton John?”

The historical series Shōgun won all the awards it was nominated for. Apart from bagging the Best Drama Series, its stars Hiroyuki Sanada won the Best Drama Actor, Anna Sawait bagged Best Drama Actress, and Tadanobu Asano earned Best Supporting Actor in a Drama. 

Another big winner for this year is the musical-thriller film Emilia Pérez which also took home four awards out of six nominations.

Before presenting the award for the best actress in a limited series, comedian Seth Rogen, who was standing alongside Catherine O'Hara, took time to give a hilarious remark to the audience. 

“Hello,” Rogen said, addressing the room. “I wanna start by saying this whole angled camera thing is very weird. It’s inelegant, it’s strange," he said.

“This whole half of the room can see my bald spot; I would’ve filled that in,” he quipped, pointing to the audience behind him. “I said no, and I regret that now completely.” 

 The Canadian duo also joked about winning fake "Golden Antlers" and "Beavers" awards from their non-existent adult films.

They are set to star in the upcoming comedy series, The Studio.

This year's awards show also earned notable firsts. First-time winners include Fernanda Torres who made history as the first Brazilian to win the award for Best Actress in a Drama for I'm Still Here, Anna Sawai who earned her first Golden Globes Best Drama Actress award, Sebastian Stan Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy film for A Different Man, Zoe Saldaña for Best supporting actress for Emilia Pérez, and Demi Moore, who made headlines for her acceptance speech after winning Best Actress for The Substance.

Demi and Margaret also drew laughs for their hilarious mini skit referencing their body horror flick, The Substance. 

“What are you doing here? This is my week...You have to respect the balance," Demi said to her co-star. The two were both nominated for Best Lead Actress and Best Supporting Actress for their roles in the film.

While some celebrities turned heads with their respective partners like Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet, others opted to bring their families to the affair. For one, Anyone But You star Glen Powell brought his parents, Glen Powell Sr. and mom Cyndy Powell, while Angeline Jolie graced the red carpet with her daughter, Zahara. 

Margaret Qualley had her dad as her date, and Harrison was joined by his daughter, 34-year-old Georgia. 

Wicked star Ariana Grande, meanwhile, had her mom Joan by her side throughout the show.
