Carla Abellana got real about how she dealt with weight gain due to hypothyroidism.

The Widow’s War actress took to Instagram on Sunday, Sept. 22 to share her weight gain struggles due to hypothyroidism which has “been the bane of the past 5 years of [her] life.”

“My hormones were nowhere within normal range, cortisol level was extremely high for so long, I was practically perimenopausal at 37 years of age, and despite fasting (more like starving myself already), along with regular and stringent workouts, I was still gaining weight constantly,” she shared.

ICYDK, hypothyroidism, also called “underactive thyroid,” is a condition where the thyroid is not releasing enough thyroid hormone, causing you to have slow metabolism, tiredness, muscle pain, and being unable to withstand cold temperatures, among others, as per the Harvard Health.

She said she consulted five doctors, did numerous tests, took countless medications “in all sorts of combinations, and spent a hefty amount five years, but to no avail.

In October 2023, Carla tried to shift doctors once again, but it took her five months to lose 18lbs. and finally achieve her target from her strict diet plan, which she eventually combined with Onda and Tempsure treatments.

“Unless you have Hypothyroidism, you’ll never know what the struggle, frustration, embarrassment, worry, and desperation is like most especially if weight and appearance are key factors in your line of work,” Carla stressed.

She added, “So just like a lot of you, I also see photos of other people who are so fit and I can’t help but feel insecure. I also wish weight loss would work like magic, but NO. It really doesn’t. There really is no shortcut.”

“Having Hypothyroidism is a pain in the butt because there is no cure for it, but there is a way. It may not be the same for all of us, but there really is a way,” she concluded.

Apart from Carla, celebrities Bela Padilla, Bea Alonzo, and Angel Locsin previously opened up about battling hypothyroidism. Singer Moira Dela Torre also revealed she had hypothyroidism and PCOS but said she had been cleared of them in March 2023.

Carla currently stars on GMA's murder mystery series Widow's War with Bea, Jean Garcia, Rita Daniela, Benjamin Alves, and Jackie Lou Blanco, among others.
