Derek Ramsay, Ellen Adarna on why they got married after only three months of dating
Derek Ramsay and Ellen Adarna have opened up about why they decided to tie the knot only three months into their relationship.
In an interview with broadcaster Karen Davila on her YouTube channel, Ellen was asked how she knew that Derek was her endgame partner despite only being a couple for a short while.
"I actually don't know. Parang nagayuma, para mo akong nagayuma. Yes, I'm sure," the former actress joked as she looked at her husband.
"Pero I can't really answer that because it just felt like, 'Yeah, this is the one. No questions, no doubts,'" she continued.
Ellen went on to say that she never felt this way towards her previous partners, including John Lloyd Cruz, who is the father of her first child Elias.
"Even when we did our vows, people there thought that we planned it," Derek said. "We did Jack en Poy to see who goes first, and then [Ellen] started and she was saying all of this, then she ended it with, 'I promise you to be the b***h that I am forever.' I was like, 'Oh, she's screwed,' because the first line of my vows is, 'Life is a b***h, then you marry one.'"
The actor then revealed that the wedding almost didn't happen because the two of them got into a huge fight because of their vows. There had been an incident where Ellen and their friends were forcing him to join in their drinking session despite being in the middle of writing his vows.
"We fought, and it just got bigger and bigger and bigger to the point na hindi na itutuloy 'yung wedding," Derek recounted. "Sinauli niya 'yung ring, she marched up the stairs—nagdabog, and tapang—pag dating sa taas [bumaba siya at sinabi] 'No, no, no, no.' Binawi niya."
Before she began a relationship with Derek, Ellen shared that she had been in a "dark place" due to multiple issues in her life that happened all at once, such as suffering from postpartum depression as well as her dad passing away.
However, things started to change for her when she underwent a mental health training program to help her get back up on her feet. Her drive to better herself eventually became one of the reasons why Derek got struck by Cupid's arrow.
"I remember she told me that she wanted to become a good mom to Elias, and that's one of the reasons why I fell in love with her. To better herself, to be a better mom to Elias," the local star said.
Elsewhere in their discussion, Derek also opened up about how he was the one who kept encouraging Ellen to make amends with John Lloyd, who she broke up with because they "weren’t compatible."
"In the beginning, ako pa 'yung nagsasabi sa kanya na people can change, give him a chance, and then we finally got them to talk for co-parenting," he said.
"Hindi ako selosong tao. She's my wife, what am I going to be jealous about?" he added.
When asked about why he proactively urged Ellen and John Lloyd to bury the hatchet, he said, "Probably because my set-up with my son, I didn't have that privilege to have good communication with his mother so that I could have a chance to be a father to my son."
Derek was referring to his son Austin with his former wife Mary Christine Jolly.
According to him, while Ellen and John Lloyd's co-parenting set-up "didn't go as smoothly" as he wished it would at the start, they eventually weathered that storm. "The co-parenting is great," he said.
"I'm so happy that it's smooth-sailing na and what's important naman here is our differences—throw that away. It's what's good for Elias," Derek highlighted.
Derek and Ellen tied the knot in November 2021. Apart from Elias, the two are also parents to their first baby Lily, who was born in October 2024.
