Cynthia Erivo has broken her silence on the recent fan incident involving herself and co-star Ariana Grande during the recent Asia premiere of Wicked: For Good.

On Nov. 13, Erivo, Grande, and the rest of the Wicked main cast were in Singapore for the event. While walking down the yellow carpet, a fan broke through the security barriers and ran toward Grande, throwing his arm around her shoulders.

Erivo, who was walking with Grande and co-stars Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum, immediately pushed the fan away and, along with Yeoh, embraced Grande to protect her.

When asked by the Today show's Savannah Guthrie about her actions that day, Erivo said she was simply acting on reflex.

"I was really thinking, I just wanted to make sure my friend was safe. I'm sure [the man] didn't mean us harm. But I just, you never know with those things. And I wanted to make sure that she was okay. That was my first instinct," Erivo said.

A day after the incident, a Singapore court charged Wen with being a public nuisance and said he faced a possible fine of S$2,000 (around P90,800). Days later, however, Singapore District Judge Christopher Goh sentenced Wen to nine days in jail.

"This act was premeditated," Goh said before handing down the sentence.

The maximum penalty for such an offense is three months in prison, a fine of S$1,500 (around P67,500), or both.

Grande has yet to speak about the incident.

The fan was identified as Australian Johnson Wen, known on social media as Pyjama Man. The incident was not the first time he had accosted a celebrity. On Instagram, he also posted videos of himself running up to Katy Perry, The Weeknd, and Chainsmokers during their respective concerts.
