BTS' Suga releases debut solo album 'D-Day'
The day has come, Yoongles! Suga of K-pop supergroup BTS has finally dropped his first solo album, titled D-DAY, on Friday, April 21.
The 10-song studio set features the title track, D-Day, and Haegeum which has a music video released alongside the album.
Four of the songs were produced by Suga in collaboration with popular artists, namely People Pt. 2 featuring IU, Snooze featuring the late Oscar-winning composer Ryuichi Sakamoto and Woosung of Korean rock band The Rose, as well as the tracks HUH? and Life Goes On that were both co-written by fellow BTS member J-hope.
Other songs included in the album are Amygdala, Interlude: Dawn, SDL, and Polar Night.
The rapper and songwriter, whose real name is Min Yoongi, produced the EP under his Agust D moniker which he previously told TIME Magazine represents his "raw side." D-Day is the third installment of his Agust D trilogy that features his self-titled mixtape released in 2016 and D-2 launched in 2020.
In an interview with IU for her vlog "IU's Palette," Suga revealed that he created his moniker as a way to express himself outside of his persona as a K-pop idol.
"When normally, as an idol, there are a lot of things I can’t say out loud. I needed a means to let my feelings out, I created another self called 'Agust D.'" the musician said.
He added that while Agust D was born out of anger against their group's haters, he has now come to terms with himself and thus decided to conclude the trilogy of his alter-ego.
"As I get older, the less and less I get angry. They referred to us as ‘BTS is back from hell.’ We were beaten up by so many haters, but I’ve forgiven all those people now. Anger was what mainly created my music. They say I’ve become mellow," Suga said.
According to the K-pop idol, the release of D-Day also marks the beginning of an era where he could possibly release a new album under his Suga stage name.
"Once Agust D’s trilogy comes to an end, it might be hard to see him again," he noted.
Meanwhile, BTS' record label BigHit Music previously released a statement describing Suga's D-Day album as one that "delves into the personal journey of SUGA as Agust D, offering an intimate portrayal of his life as an artist."
Yoongles and ARMYs who would like to get a behind-the-scenes look at Suga's new album can watch the documentary SUGA: Road to D-DAY which will premiere on Disney+ today, April 21. The K-pop idol is also set to conquer stages in Asia and the United States for his concert tour beginning April 26.
Suga is the fourth BTS member to make a solo debut in the seven-piece boy group, following J-hope with Jack in the Box on July 15 of last year, RM with Indigo on Dec. 2, 2022, and Jimin with Face on March 24 of this year.
