The crossover we never had: Taylor Swift was supposed to have a 'Twilight' cameo
A double Taylor film? We would have loved to see it.
13 years after the release of the Twilight sequel New Moon, director Chris Weitz has revealed that Grammy-award-winning artist Taylor Swift was supposed to have a short cameo in the film.
In a podcast episode of The Twilight Effect, Weitz said that Taylor expressed interest in appearing in the hit film series at the time.
"Taylor Swift and I had the same agent at the time," Chris shared. "He said like, 'Taylor would like to be in this movie. Not because of you, but because she’s a Twihard.'"
"She will be someone at the cafeteria, or the diner, or whatever but she just wants to be in this movie."
Although it would have been a dream project for Swift, the director ultimately rejected the offer because he was afraid that the artist would take up too much of the spotlight. Swift was dating actor Taylor Lautner at the time, so the cameo wouldn't have gone unnoticed.
"The hardest thing for me was to be like, ‘The moment that Taylor Swift walks onto the screen for about five minutes, nobody is going to be able to process anything," Weitz explained.
With Swifties and Twihards left thinking of the possibilities, even Weitz himself has regrets over rejecting the famous artist.
"I kick myself for it too, because — I was like, 'Wow, I could’ve been hanging out with Taylor Swift," he added. “And so, I sort of feel I had sort of cost myself a chance to hang out with Taylor Swift and she must’ve just been like, 'Who is this jerk who would say no?'"
"But sometimes you make decisions and you go: 'This is for the best of the film.'"
New Moon was released in November of 2009. Meanwhile, the Taylor Swift and Kanye West beef began in August of the same year after the rapper interrupted the then-19-year-old during her MTV Video Music Awards acceptance speech.
If Weitz had accepted Taylor's request, her cameo would have definitely piqued the interest of pop culture fans.
