Why does media mogul Felipe Gozon start working at 4 a.m.?

Published Feb 26, 2025 11:36 pm

For Felipe L. Gozon, chairman of GMA Network Inc., the key to success starts long before sunrise.

The seasoned businessman and leader in the Philippine media industry begins his day at an impressive 4 a.m., he said in an interview on Power Talks with Pia Arcangel.

This early start isn't just a habit—it's the cornerstone of his incredible work ethic, visionary leadership, and commitment to excellence. Working that early is efficient for him as his mind is "very clear" at that time of the day.

"By 5:30 [a.m.] to 6 [a.m.], I have my breakfast. After that, I go back to work with the newspaper then I sleep for about an hour then I exercise. If there's more work to do, then I work, but even if there's work I exercise," he said.

Lead by example

Although Gozon retired from his CEO position in December 2023 after holding the post for 23 years, he made a lasting impact on the media network by making it one of the largest television and media networks in the Philippines. This is made possible by his leadership style.

"As much as possible, I want to show by example what I expect people to do," he told Pia.

Gozon also highlighted the importance of not listening to excuses as a leader.

"We better talk about how not to repeat the mistake and how to do things properly after that. That's the better approach rather than talking about why things were not done. It's better to talk [about] how things should be done," he said.

When asked if his leadership style evolved, he answered, "No, I have been constant. I am very proud that the network became number one in ratings and net income."

Moreover, the media mogul also noted how his father, Benjamin Gozon, a lawyer and former secretary of the Department of Agriculture in 1962, inspired him as a man.

"My father occupied high government positions but he never lost his humility [and] honesty. He was working very hard and treated everybody fairly, and I saw it, and it became my role model."

'Set your goal'

Behind the polished boardrooms and the longstanding network lies a man whose journey is as inspiring as it is relatable.

"In life, you have to set a goal, and when you achieve the goal, you cannot imagine how you feel. It's the best reward of all. It's not money, it's not compensating, it's achieving what you set out to do," he said as a message to his younger self.

Ultimately, he wants to be "remembered as a good man having done a good job."

Gilberto Duavit Jr. took over the CEO post from Gozon in January 2024.
