‘Her impact will live on’: Miss USA 2019 Cheslie Kryst dies at 30
Miss USA 2019 Cheslie Kryst has passed away after falling from her high-rise apartment in Manhattan, New York. She was 30 years old.
Authorities said the beauty queen turned lawyer, fashion blogger, and Extra correspondent died on Sunday, Jan. 30 after jumping from the 60-story apartment building around 7:15 a.m., New York standard time.
Kryst reportedly lived on the ninth floor of the Orion Building and was last seen on the 29th-floor terrace, according to a report from The Washington Post.
The beauty queen’s family also confirmed Kryst’s death in a statement provided to NBC News. “In devastation and great sorrow, we share the passing of our beloved Cheslie. Her great light was one that inspired others around the world with her beauty and strength.”
“She cared, she loved, she laughed and she shined. Cheslie embodied love and served others, whether through her work as an attorney fighting for social justice, as Miss USA, and as a host on EXTRA. But most importantly, as a daughter, sister, friend, mentor, and colleague—we know her impact will live on,” Kryst’s family said.
Kryst’s family also requested privacy as they mourn the death of the late beauty queen.
In a statement, Extra said they’re “devastated” with the news of Kryst’s passing. “Our hearts are broken. Cheslie was not just a vital part of our show, she was a beloved part of our Extra family and touched the entire staff. Our deepest condolences to all her family and friends.”

Prior to her death, Kryst posted a photo of herself wearing an all-black outfit with the caption, “May this day bring you rest and peace.”
Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray was among the many friends who mourned Kryst’s death. “Ches...I can't believe the news. Rest in peace angel. The world will miss your light.”
Kryst was crowned as Miss USA in May 2019. She represented the US at the Miss Universe 2019 pageant and finished in the top 10. She crowned her successor Asya Branch of Mississippi at the Miss USA 2020 pageant in November 2020.
