Lea Salonga’s child Nic Chien cast as Jack in PH production of 'Into the Woods'
Nic Chien, the child of Tony Award-winning actress Lea Salonga, is joining the star-studded cast of the Philippine Production of Into the Woods as Jack.
Theatre Group Asia (TGA) announced on Feb. 10 that the 18-year-old actor will play the role of Jack.
“When the fun is done, he steals what he can and runs! [Nic Chien] is JACK!” the collective wrote.
He will be acting closely with Eugene Domingo, who will play his mother in the musical.
Nic is the last addition to the star-studded cast of the musical, joining his mom Lea as the Witch, Filipino American Broadway star Arielle Jacobs as Cinderella, Joaquin Pedro Valdes as Cinderella's Prince/Wolf, and couple Nyoy and Mikkie Volante as the Baker and the Baker’s Wife.
This will be his return to the stage after his professional theater debut in Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment Group’s production of Matilda in 2017, where he played Alice.
Premiered in 1986, Into the Woods intertwines the plots of several fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm, including Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and Cinderella.
The musical is tied together by a story about a childless baker and his wife, their interaction with a witch who had cursed them, and their encounters with the fairy tale characters. The musical was adapted into a Disney movie in 2014.
Into the Woods will be held from Aug. 7 to 24 at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Makati. It will have a limited engagement run of 18 performances.
