It’s official: ‘Glee’ is coming back with a reboot
The New Directions are tuning up again—Glee is coming back!
Glee is officially returning with a reboot on Disney+ and Hulu, more than 11 years after the musical comedy-drama series ended.
The show announced the news on Instagram on Oct. 21, sharing a graphic that read, “It’s official. Glee is returning,” alongside the caption, “Currently gleeking out!”
The reboot will be produced by 20th Television, the studio behind the original series. However, details about the new show’s storyline, cast, and release date have yet to be announced.
Series co-creator Ryan Murphy previously revealed in September that he had finished writing a script for the reboot with fellow co-creators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, who worked on the show’s first two seasons.
Murphy also said he had been in contact with around 10 members of the original cast, describing their responses as enthusiastic, although he did not identify the actors involved.
According to TheWrap, Lea Michele—who played aspiring Broadway star Rachel Berry throughout the original series—is reportedly in talks to reprise her role, though her return has not been officially confirmed.
Glee originally aired on Fox for six seasons from 2009 to 2015. It followed members of the New Directions high school glee club as they navigated adolescence, relationships, identity, and social issues through musical performances.
The original cast included Michele, Cory Monteith, Amber Riley, Chris Colfer, Kevin McHale, Jenna Ushkowitz, Dianna Agron, Heather Morris, Darren Criss, Harry Shum Jr., Naya Rivera, Matthew Morrison, and Jane Lynch.
The series became known for its covers of popular songs and earned six Primetime Emmy Awards during its run. Its original cast was also affected by the deaths of Monteith in 2013, Mark Salling in 2018, and Naya Rivera in 2020.
