LOOK: Miss Philippines Earth 2020 Roxanne Baeyens stuns in her national costume
Miss Philippines Earth 2020 Roxanne “Roxie” Baeyens’ “Si Malakas at si Maganda”-inspired national costume for the upcoming virtual Miss Earth 2020 pageant symbolizes hope that pays homage to mother nature.
In her social media accounts, Roxie, a Filipino-Belgian beauty from Baguio City, posted photos of her in her national costume by designer Jorick Lopez Limpag. Si Malakas at si Maganda is a Philippine folktale narrating the origin of humanity. In the story, there is a bamboo that was broken in half by a bird, which, for Roxie, is “a symbol of where we could fly again.”
In her post, Roxie, who is an advocate of urban gardening and agriculture, wrote, "As the earth faces the pandemic, this costume proudly synthesizes the hardships of those who battled the pandemic” with its headpiece—made of rubber curves and gemstones—that can be converted into a mask. She also dons a crown that is “pictured like a sun" that symbolizes "the rise of new beginning.”
Her dress was cut out from beads that mirror leaves and gemstones. The costume also features a neckpiece, and arm and leg accessories that are inspired by roots of trees.
The wings are made of rubber, capiz and stones. “Within this costume, it can be said that the sun will rise… and we will fly again,” Roxie wrote. “We are all beautiful creatures who are strong.”
Her photos and video, shot by Leslie Reyes and Bryan Reyes, feature scenic views from Mt. Polis in Bauko, Mountain Province, and the Baguio Bamboo Ecopark.
