Summer hair goals: How to take care and style your locks this season

Published Apr 18, 2024 5:21 pm

It's the perfect time to go outdoors, but the heat in the Philippines this summer has just been brutal. Not only does it cause damage to the skin, but the sun, chlorine, and humidity can take a toll on your hair, too.

For celebrity hairstylist Paul Nebres, it's important to have low-maintenance hair this season, starting with a short hairstyle.

"Ngayong summer it's gonna be hot, [so] you need to [have] low maintenance hair lang na parang wash-and-wear," he said. "I think bob [cut] is really 'in' this summer."

He said that while a bob is typically cut straight along the jawline, you can still play it with textures and variations to flatter all face shapes. "You can do a blunt bob and it's so easy to style," Paul, whose clientele include Nadine Lustre and Catriona Gray, said.

If you're concerned about flyaway hair, there are many reasons why that happens, and one of them is forgetting to dry your hair properly.

"Usually, we forget to comb our hair or dry our hair. Naiiwan nating basa, so sinusundan niya lang yung natural shape ng neck natin," Paul explained. Additionally, when our hair is wet, it becomes more fragile. So using a microfiber towel and the right hair brush or comb can avoid breakage.

"We have to dry our hair to avoid the flyaway. Also use specific hair tools like Dyson Airwrap, Supersonic, or a natural [bristle] brush for every day, like a round brush," Paul said.

Those who have long locks, however, can keep their hair away from their face and neck in a sleek ponytail or top bun.

"A messy bun is nice if you're gonna be on a beach. Kasi if you do a curly, it's not gonna last the whole day," Paul said, adding to keep it "as messy as possible" to add character.

Hair care tips

In addition to styling tricks, Paul provided some helpful hair care routines to keep your hair looking its best all summer long.

  1. Limit the use of hair products. Following Paul's low-maintenance approach, aim for a minimalist routine. Using too many products can weigh down your hair. "Don't put so much products on your hair and make sure to wash your hair two to thrice a week," he said. "'Cause actually chemicals [are] the main reason kung bakit nag-da-dry yung hair natin. Bleaching, ayan 'yong mga usually nagca-cause ng damage ng hair natin."
  2. Wear sunscreen for hair. Yes, there's such a thing. High levels of UV radiation can damage the lipid layer, which acts like a protective shield on your hair. When damaged, it weakens the hair's natural defenses, making it dry, frizzy, and more prone to split ends. "It's really effective. Actually, the sun really damages our hair. That's why if you can notice 'yung mga surfers, they have really brassy hair because of the sunlight. Kaya may mga sunscreen din talaga na specifically for hair and not just for hair, for our scalp also kasi ayon yung direct na tinatamaan ng sunlight," he said.
  3. Use a hair mask every week. Because the sun can leave the hair feeling dry, Paul also said to keep the hair healthy and moisturized with a mask every week.
  4. Protect your scalp. Wear a hat or a silk scarf when you're outdoors—it's a stylish way to keep your hair protected!
