Bags go from practical to glittery in 2025

Fringe swayed on the runways of almost every major brand, embellishing all kinds of styles, from top handles to cross-bodies and clutches. They came in silk, leather, and beaded to surely turn heads. For more understated but no less attention-grabbing versions, opt for natural materials like raffia which many of our local manufacturers do so well and export to the rest of the world.

Shells 

Shells are another mainstay of our exporters, used in gorgeous clutches or used as accents in leather or bags of native materials. As seen in collections abroad, they need not be a resort thing as they have traditionally been, fitting right in with a city wardrobe.

Soft & suede

Suede is a big thing, as seen on models clutching them for dear life, but they are meant to work hard and all the scuffs that they go through will only add to their patina and worn-out retro appeal. Pieces in fabric or supple leather also provide that desirable softness when held close to the body.

Waist & body

Fanny packs have become luxury items, as created by top signature houses, and staples because of their utility. To make them even more useful, many are convertible, going from waist to shoulder and cross-body.

Collegiate backpacks

There is a return to schooldays with the backpack, but just like the fanny, many have become objects of desire with luxe materials. You can also go for local and the more unusual, like one inspired by the bahay kubo by Ronan John.

Buckets

Bucket bags are back though they never really left since the 1930s when Louis Vuitton introduced the style as a way to transport champagne bottles. They maintain a Parisian chic, whether in leather, beaded or in the wicker varieties we have here.

Doubled up

In lieu of a big tote, two bags are better than one for versatility. They also have a “charmed” look about them, with one dangling off the other.

East-west

The long, elongated bags that go from east to west seem to have taken after Alaïa’s viral Le Teckel or “dachshund” Bag, Bottega Veneta’s Andiamo and Loewe’s Puzzle Fold tote. It’s no doubt sleek and makes a statement even with the most casual outfits.

Doctor, doctor

The physician’s bag means serious business, especially if you need an all-purpose hold-all. Functional as they are, doctor bags have been made prettier in various shapes and materials.

Go green

Brat girl summer and Wicked at year end seem to remain with us through the color green preferred by many designers. Its associations with nature are mood-enhancing after all, in all shades from apple to olive and emerald.

Prints

Glitter

The ‘70s disco era keeps the party going in 2025, with even conventional shapes dipped in glitter or dripping in rhinestones and sequins, all reflecting the light to look forward to a happy new year.
