The Miss Universe Philippines 2021 preliminaries kickstarted on Sept. 23 with a 7-minute show featuring the candidates in their elaborate national costumes.
The costumes they wore were an ode to the Manila Carnival Queens, the first Filipina beauty queens from the early American colonial period up to the time before the Second World War.
"This year’s National Costume theme is a celebration of a bygone era of elegance and sophistication," MUPh wrote on their Facebook page. "So we wanted to bring these back to life and imagine how they would have looked today."
The 28 MUPh contestants showcased their Filipina beauties and their jaw-dropping costumes with the newly constructed Clark International Airport as their backdrop.
"It showcases the Filipina beauty, heritage, and artistry interpreted in modern, traditional, and avant-garde ways. Regardless of its interpretation, at the very core is the heart of a Filipina who is proud of her history, heritage, and country," the organization added.
