‘Squid Game’ is the top trending Halloween costume according to Google
Netflix survival drama hit series Squid Game is making waves across the world, and with the spooky season just around the corner, it is not impossible for it to serve as an inspiration for many for peole’s Halloween costumes this year.
Since the show’s release in mid-September, it has taken over the video streaming platform and is set to dethrone period-era drama Bridgerton as Netflix's biggest show ever.
According to a recent report released by Google, Squid Game is the top trending costume in the US so far this week.
The report did not specify which specific costumes from the show are being searched but the options may include the workers’ pink jumpsuit with a fencing-inspired face mask, the players’ green track suit, The Front Man’s all-black outfit, or the dress of “red light, green light” animatronic girl.
The Top 5 trending Halloween costumes this week are:
1. Squid Game
2. Gorilla
3. Britney Spears
4. Carnage
5. Venom
In Google’s annual “Frightgeist” for the most searched Halloween costumes in the US, Squid Game now ranks at No. 23 and is being widely searched in Detroit, Michigan; Waco-Temple-Bryan, Texas; Columbia, South Carolina; Lexington, Kentucy; and Wachington, DC.
And with the costume’s popularity, Google said, “There’s a frighteningly high chance you will see a Squid Game costume on Halloween this year.”
Google also reported that hoomans are looking for Squid Game costumes for their furry friends as it is the top search for trending dog costumes, which include:
1. Squid Game
2. Race car
3. Vampire
4. Donkey
5. Lobster
Of course, couples costumes are still a thing. So far, people in the US’ top search are costumes for Trixie and Timmy Turner of The Fairly Odd Parents, the notorious couple Bonnie and Clyde, Skid and Pump from the web series Spooky Month, the Brangelina characters Mr. & Mrs. Smith from the 2005 action/romance movie of the same name, and Cosmo and Wanda also from The Fairly OddParents.
A few weeks before Halloween, people are already getting in the mood and searching for movies to watch. In the US, the most-searched movies over the past week are:
1. Halloween (1978)
2. Friday the 13th
3. Hocus Pocus
4. A Nightmare on Elm Street
5. Halloweentown
Since Squid Game’s release on Sept. 17, there has been a surge in demand on items related to the show (even if they are just dupes) online. According to Korean news outfit Pulse, copies of the green track suit are being sold for almost $40 or P2,000, while The Front Man’s black mask retails for $85 or P4,300.
Netflix also launched recently official Squid Game merch, including players’ numbered shirts, and icons hoodie but as of this writing, they are only available to US viewers only.
