In your running era? Here are expert tips for choosing the right attire
Are you in your running era?
No matter how humid the weather is these days, no one can stop Filipinos in their running era from joining several fun runs and marathons.
Apart from beating your PR (personal record) and finishing your goal, the right attire is essential. This isn't just to look good when running but to make sure you're comfortable when you work out in the heat, wind, or rain.
What to wear
Jessa Veil Catarong, an ISSA-certified running coach, stressed that in choosing an attire, runners must focus on “comfort, support, and preventing injuries.”
“The basic must-haves include running shoes, anti-blister socks, comfortable running shorts or leggings, a Dri-fit shirt or tank top, and a sports bra for women,” she told PhilSTAR L!fe.
Catarong noted that attire varies depending on what type of running you’ll join, weather conditions, or even your mood on the day.
For instance, in trail running, Lhore Quirong, a Half-Marathoner Road Runner and a Long-Distance Trail Runner, suggests that one can wear a windbreaker, an activewear top, arm sleeves, gloves, shorts, leggings, and thick running socks.
“Some just wear a shirt and shorts. It depends on whichever suits the runner that would make her/him feel comfortable,” she said.
In choosing the right material, Quirong said to opt for clothes made of polyester fiber and/or spandex fabrics since “it's less likely to absorb sweat,” and it won't become “heavy” which may cause discomfort while running.
Catrong added that runners must avoid clothing made of cotton fabrics.
“They hold onto sweat, which can cause chafing and discomfort,” she said.
Moreover, you should always choose clothes that fit you perfectly—not too tight or too loose—according to Catrong. Runners should also avoid wearing accessories and jewelry that might get in the way.
Budget-wise, you may think that branded clothes will help you be at the top of your game, but experts stressed that splurging on running clothes is unnecessary.
Catarong said, “Big brands might offer great quality and design, but as a beginner, you don’t need to spend a lot on gear.”
“Later on, when you run consistently and start enjoying it more, you’ll probably want to invest in better gear—especially running shoes,” she added.
Quirong, who has been joining running events for more than a year, shared that most of her running clothes were purchased from online shopping platforms like Lazada, Shopee, and TikTok. These still gave her the same comfort as the branded ones but at a cheap price.
She also shared her other way of preparing her outfit, which is checking the event shirt design.
“Whenever I register for a run, I always check the event shirt design. Then I go to my shopping carts and check out fits that complement the event shirt designs since I prefer wearing activewear sports bras and cute athletic tops than the event shirts,” she told L!fe.
Just like conditioning your body before the run, Catarong said that wearing the right clothes is important when preparing for the run.
“It keeps you comfortable, helps prevent injuries, and lets you move freely [...] and clothes that fit well won’t hold you back. Also, dressing for the weather—whether it’s hot or cold—helps keep you safe and feeling good,” she told L!fe.
For her part, Quirong suggests also experimenting when choosing an attire, and listening to your body on what makes it comfortable.
“My advice is to plan and wear 'fits that make you feel excited to go for a run; that make you keep going; that make you hit PRs you didn't expect you could achieve,” she added.
For her part, Catarong has a piece of advice for those who want to start their running journey.
“Your running journey begins with one simple decision—to start. Don’t wait for the perfect moment or the ideal gear. The only requirement is that you show up,” she said, adding, Whether you run, jog, or walk, each step is a commitment to yourself and a step toward growth.”
