The psychology of joyful saving
Metrobank's 'Spark Joy' promo turns discipline into delight
With so many good finds in stores and online, it can be quite tempting to splurge instead of save money. Choosing the latter often feels like a struggle—but there are ways to make it not only easier, but more satisfying.
According to psychologist Wenna Brigaste, by rewarding yourself after hitting a savings goal, you can get a sense of security and accomplishment. “It serves as a positive reinforcement for doing a ‘good job’ in saving,” she says. “It triggers dopamine release in the brain, which is in charge of pleasure and motivation to repeat the behavior.”
Rewarding yourself after saving money also provides a sense of control that leads to a high level of internal satisfaction and autonomy. “It’s like letting it sink in that ‘Wow. I can actually do this?’ It just makes you feel good,” adds Brigaste.
Psychologist Lordy Santos agrees, noting that rewards could help you turn saving money into a habit eventually. “Since sacrificing is involved before the fun part, it becomes a way to practice your ability to tolerate or prefer delayed gratification, which is linked to emotional maturity,” he tells PhilSTAR L!fe. “It [also] gives you a stable pattern that can be known as GEAR (Goal-Effort-Award or reward-Repeat) that can guarantee success or happiness.”
Santos adds that as long as rewards are strategically given to yourself—not exactly for indulgence, but for the reinforcement of a wanted behavior anchored in your values and aspirations, you can “build a discipline or a habit that’s not just applicable in finances but in other areas of your life as well.”
You might think that rewarding yourself could only mean spending the money you’ve saved, but there are other ways to celebrate your progress.
Metrobank’s recently launched Spark Joy promo, for one, lets you enjoy guaranteed rewards of up to P10,000 for hitting savings milestones—whether it’s for travel, for a home makeover, for your education, for your peace of mind, or for any goal you wish to achieve in the future.
If you think it's exactly what you're looking for, you may sign up for your first Metrobank account and get an eGift worth up to P10,000.
The rewards will be in the form of a one-time Giftaway eGift, which will be given to Metrobank clients who are able to successfully register and maintain for at least six months a P15,000 Average Daily Balance (ADB) or an ADB increase in their deposit accounts.
| ADB Increase | Giftaway eGift Certificate |
| P15,000 to <P25,000 | P300 |
| P25,000 to <P50,000 | P500 |
| P50,000 to <P100,000 | P1,500 |
| P100,000 to <P500,000 | P2,000 |
| P500,000 and above | P10,000 |
New deposit clients must register for the promo seven calendar days from account opening in the branch or upon full verification of their eSavings account.
The promo builds on the bank’s #EarlyGIFTChallenge, which is a pre-holiday tradition that “encourages individuals to plan ahead to empower themselves to take charge of their finances before all the holiday expenses start to pour in and to make smarter, goal-based decisions for better money management.” GIFT, in this context, is short for Goal-setting, Investing wisely, Following a budget, and Taking advantage of deals.
Running until Feb. 28, 2026, the Spark Joy promo is open to all new and select existing deposit clients. You can register via the Giftaway portal here. You may also request registration via the Metrobank Contact Center at (02) 88-700-700.
