MMDA records 23 road crash incidents, 8 stalled vehicles on Dec. 5 amid Christmas rush
Experienced heavy traffic last Dec. 5? The holiday rush is hitting hard, as the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority revealed that it recorded 23 road crashes and eight stalled vehicles on Friday.
In an advisory posted on their Facebook page, the government agency explained why traffic on both lanes of EDSA grew heavy.
"Ang naranasang mabigat na daloy ng trapiko ay pinalala ng maraming insidente ng banggaan at tumirik na mga sasakyan," MMDA stated.
"Nakapagtala ang Metropolitan Manila Development Authority ng 23 road crash incidents at walong stalled vehicles mula 2:00 p.m. hanggang 9:00 p.m. Ang insidenteng ito ay pawang naasistehan ng mga traffic enforcers ng ahensiya," they added.
Based on traffic monitoring, heavy traffic was reported along EDSA northbound from Guadalupe to Megamall, and southbound from Dario Bridge to the Quezon City Academy U-turn slot.
Conditions eased in other parts of EDSA at around 8 p.m.
MMDA assured that their traffic enforcers remain deployed at choke points and intersections along major roads in Metro Manila.
Metro Manila was among the cities with the worst traffic congestion in the world in 2024, according to TomTom, a multinational traffic data provider and location technology specialist.
The report ranked Metro Manila as the 14th area with the worst traffic in the world, having a 27-minute and 30-second travel time every 10 kilometers and a 58% congestion level. This is two minutes longer than it took to cover the same distance in 2023.
Moreover, there have also been a total of 199 traffic jams last year.
According to MMDA Chairman Romando Artes, the traffic congestion in the metropolis is a decades-old problem and explained that vehicle volume, lane blockages, diggings and road repairs, ongoing construction of government flagship infrastructure projects, road configuration and conditions are some of the factors that continue to strain the road network.
