Here come the tears: Burger King is experiencing onion shortage

While the soda giants are experiencing a shortage in sugar supply, Burger King Philippines is experiencing a shortage in onions.

The fast food chain announced the news on Facebook on Aug. 17.

"We don't mean to make you cry. Our onions are a bit hard to come by these days due to a shortage in regular supply, affecting our Whopper and other flame-grilled burgers," it said.

In lieu of onions, you can instead get crispy onions, extra lettuce, and extra tomato on your burgers.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) acknowledged on Aug. 10 that there is a lack of supply of white onions in the market.

"Yung sa white onions, wala na talagang supply. Tiningnan natin 'yung inventory at wala na tayong supply ng white onion," DA Undersecretary Kristine Evangelista said in an interview on Unang Balita, adding that even wet markets are short on onions.

The DA is mulling over importing white onions to fill the demand. However, this plan was hit by Sen. Imee Marcos, who remains unconvinced there's a local shortage.

“The DA was urged to assess white onion shortage, as it was asked on sugar and porcine PAP (processed animal protein) shortages. Again, no data could be presented, just blanket claims that the warehouses we inspected were really empty,” she said.

Prior to the sugar importation fiasco, some P32 million worth of smuggled onions were seized by the Bureau of Customs in Misamis Oriental last July.
