Groom dies, bride injured in helicopter crash hours after wedding
A groom died in a helicopter crash in Georgia just a few hours after marrying the love of his life.
Media outlets like Fox 5 and ABC 7 reported that the newlyweds were going to the Peachtree-DeKalb airport on board a Robinson R-66 helicopter for their honeymoon when it crashed in Dawson County on the evening of their wedding last Friday, May 29.
Off-road vehicles and chainsaws had to be used just so authorities could rescue the victims.
The groom—identified as Dave Fiji, 25—and the pilot died in the wreck. The bride, meanwhile, was left injured. She had no broken bones, just severe bruises and wounds, and will be discharged from the hospital soon.
Dave's father George told ABC affiliate WSB-TV that his son was initially worried about flying in foggy weather conditions. “He said, ‘I wouldn’t fly, we would not fly in this visibility,’” recalled George.
According to George, the couple had the "perfect wedding" before the tragedy. "We couldn't ask for anything more," he added.
As of writing, an investigation into the crash is still ongoing.
