Alex Eala, Venus Williams off to Bad Homburg doubles quarterfinals after straight set win
World No. 30 Alex Eala and former World No. 1 legend Venus Williams debuted at the Bad Homburg Open Doubles in Germany with a straight set win against Australian Alexandra Osborne and American Catherine Harrison in the round of 16 on Wednesday, June 24.
It was a quick win for Eala, 21, and Williams, 46, who pounded out a 6-3, 6-4 victory against their opponents in just 1 hour and 10 minutes.
The first set looked like easy business for the duo, comfortably edging out Osborne and Harrison with a 4-0 lead in the first set. A determined push-back eased Eala and Williams' lead by 2, with Osborne and Harrison gaining with 4-2. But the solid chemistry between the newly minted duo Eala and Williams pushed them to dominate the opening set with 6-3.
In the second set, Osborne and Harrison had recovered, forcing a 4-4 tie after gaining a break point. The final two games belonged to Eala and Williams, however, allowing them to secure their straight-set victory.
Waving to their fans after the win, Williams executed a celebratory twirl on the court.
They are set to go against Slovakia's Tereza Mihalikova and the UK's Olivia Nicholls, both No. 2 seeds, in the quarterfinals.
