Pringles wants to make the ‘Pringles Spider’ official

By Sofia Valderama Published Jul 08, 2022 1:58 pm

There's a spider that looks very much like the Pringles mascot, Mr. P, and they're asking to have the insect renamed to their brand name.

The kidney garden spider is a green orb weaver with black and white markings on it's abdomen that resemble to the mustachioed logo.

“Once you see it, you can’t unsee it – the slanted hairline, the beady eyes and even that signature ‘stache – the resemblance is unCANny,” read the latest press release from Kellogg Company, Pringles’s parent company.

Pringles shared in a tweet, that they are encouraging snack enthusiasts to sign a petition in renaming the Kidney Garden spider as “Pringles Spider.”

“We’re calling on the arachnid community to do what’s right and recognize this very real spider as the Pringles Spider,” Pringles’ online petition reads.

Pringles claims that if the petition will be recognized by the International Society of Arachnology, the first 1500 signatories will receive one can of Pringles as a gift, which is redeemable within 12 months from the issue date.

A few days after releasing the petition, the Pringles research team released a video on Instagram showing both images and videos of the Kidney Garden spider. The Araneus mitificus is native in Thailand, Singapore, and Vietnam, according to Nature World News.

In addition to signing, fans can also adopt their own Pringles Spider through the Pringles Spider Program and they will be given an official certificate acknowledging their adoption. The spiders are named Samson, Tallulah, Buster, Donna, Dave, and Zadie.

The world was introduced to the Pringles can and logo in 1968 and with the Pringles Spider’s resemblance to the mustachioed logo, it is said to be the “perfect ad” because it can reach people where other advertisements cannot. The video showed that the Pringles spider was found in Spokane, Washington; Cincinnati, Ohio; Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Managua, Nicaragua.

The party snack brand believed that “once you pop, you can’t stop” and so they plan on using the Pringles Spider in games, merchandise, movies, music videos, and to gain sponsorships.
