Man intentionally robs bank for $1 to be sent to federal prison

A man robbed a bank in Utah in the calmest way possible and then waits impatiently for the police to arrive.

A man from Utah named Donald Santacroce, 65, committed a robbery in Wells Fargo Bank near 300 South Main Street in Salt Lake City on Monday, March 6.

According to the NBC report, he entered the bank and handed a note to the bank tellers, saying that he is robbing the bank and then they should give him $1 (P55).

“Please pardon me for doing this but this is a robbery. Please give me $1.00 Thank you,” the note reads.

Although confused, the bank tellers complied with his “request” and then asked him to leave, but Santacroce refused and demanded that they should call the police and then waited in the bank’s lobby.

Apparently, the police took a long time before they arrived, where Santacroce began to be impatient and then asked the employees how long the police would arrive.

"Donald sat down in the bank lobby and waited for the police to arrive. While waiting for police, Donald made a statement to the victims that they are lucky (he) didn't have a gun because it was taking the police so long to get there,” the affidavit reads.

Though he appeared not a serious threat in the beginning, that statement prompted the bank manager to protect his employees by keeping them in the back room.

“At this point the branch manager said she ushered all of her employees into a back room for their safety where she locked the doors," it continued.

Shortly after, the police arrived, with Santacroce handing them the dollar he robbed from the tellers and said he "wanted to get arrested and go to federal prison."

They arrested the 65-year-old man and took him into custody. Nobody was injured at the scene.

Santacroce’s intentions for the robbery aren’t clear but shared with the police that after his release, he will rob another bank until he gets to the federal prison.

"Donald said he had done this because he wanted to get arrested and go to federal prison. Donald stated that if he gets out of jail, he will rob another bank and ask for more money next time trying to get the desired result of going to federal prison," according to the arrest report.

The week before the robbery incident, Santacroce was arrested for “careless driving,” where he was also reported to be driving with a suspended license in Missouri.
