The Department of Education (DepEd) is reverting to the old school calendar for school year (SY) 2024-2025, with classes beginning in July and ending in May of the next year.

Education Secretary and Vice President Sara Duterte signed DepEd Order No. 3, series of 2024, dated Feb. 19 amending the current school calendar.

The change was brought about as Deped "recognizes the clamor" to return to the old opening of classes before the pandemic.

With the adjusted calendar for SY 2024-2025, the end of the school year for SY 2023-2024 has also been moved up to May 31, 2024 instead of the original June 14 date.

The official start for the next school year will be on July 29, 2024, Monday while the end date will be on May 16, 2025, Friday.

End of school year rites is scheduled for May 29 to 31, 2024, or June 1, only upon consultation with teachers and parents.

Additionally, other school calendar activities like the National Learning Camp which will now take three weeks instead of five, and Brigada Eskwela which is set for July 22 to 27.

DepEd earlier confirmed in January 2024 that it would begin the process of gradually bringing back the old school calendar. Lawmakers have also filed bills seeking to bring back the June to March school year with students going on break from April to May, to avoid the heat experienced during the summer months.

Changes to the calendar are being done moderately to not affect students' and teachers' vacation days.
