Pop icon Cher trends on PH Twitter after lauding Leni Robredo: ‘Let women do it’
One of the world's famous icons, Cher, casually chimes in on Philippine politics.
American pop singer Cher topped the Philippines’ Twitter trending list on Feb. 16 after lauding women—specifically, Vice President Leni Robredo.
It all started when the Goddess of Pop tweeted saying she doesn’t know who Leni is, seemingly in response to a follower who may have brought up Robredo to her sometime prior to posting.
“Excuse Dont Know Leni,” the singer wrote to her millions of followers.
One Twitter user replied to explain who Robredo is and mentioned her bid for the presidency. The tweet read: “Leni Robredo is the current Vice President of the Philippines and soon to be our President!”

Cher then replied to the said tweet, expressing her delight to “let women do it.”

After her reply, Cher also tweeted a disclaimer that she doesn’t know everything and everyone and that the public should “cut me some slack.”
The pop sensation added: “I WORK HOURS EVERYDAY SOMETIMES TALKING TO SEVERAL CONTINENTS AT ONCE TRYING TO HELP,MAKE CHANGES. BYE.”
Apart from her music career, Cher is also involved in humanitarian efforts such as being the National Chairperson and Honorary Spokesperson for the Children’s Craniofacial Association since 1990 and running her own foundation, Cher Charitable Foundation Inc.
Prior to her consecutive tweets related to Robredo, the American singer posted on Feb. 15 without context about letting a woman do something in order for it to be done right. Cher wrote: “IF YOU WANT IT DONE RIGHT….LET A WOMAN DO IT.”
The said tweet may have allegedly spurred Robredo’s supporters, who follow the pop icon on Twitter, to tweet the said message into the context of letting the sole female candidate ascend to the presidency, leading to Cher genuinely questioning who Robredo is.
As of writing on Feb. 16, Cher ranked second on Philippines’ Twitter trends. Her “Bravo” reply has racked over 91k likes and 47k retweets.
Megastar Sharon Cuneta, wife of Robredo’s running mate Senator Kiko Pangilinan, expressed her gratitude to the singer for acknowledging Robredo both as a presidential aspirant and as a woman.
“Thank you, @cher!!! My husband is running as Leni’s Vice-President and they are a wonderful, honest, God-fearing, knowledgable team! We love you! #WomenPower,” Cuneta wrote.
