MMDA says viral wheelchair ramp on EDSA busway 'imperfect' but a 'big help' to seniors, PWDs
Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) acknowledged that the now-viral wheelchair ramp at the EDSA busway's PhilAm station in Quezon City is "imperfect" but is a "big help" nevertheless.
In a statement released on Wednesday, July 17, the MMDA explained that the agency just followed a height restriction for the MRT.
"[K]aya hindi naging posible na ipantay ang elevator sa footbridge," it said. The ramp was the means of access between the elevator and the footbridge.
The MMDA noted that while the ramp's design is imperfect, it's still beneficial—especially to senior citizens, pregnant women, and persons with disabilities.
"Hindi ito perpektong disenyo lalo na sa mga naka wheelchair pero malaking tulong pa rin ito para sa mga senior citizens, buntis at ibang PWDs sa halip na umakyat gamit ang hagdan," it said.
"Magtatalaga ang MMDA ng mga kawani para umasiste sa mga PWDs kung mahirapan sila pumanhik ng rampa," the MMDA added.
MMDA dismissed negative comments about the ramp, saying it isn't too steep for walking.
In a video from GMA News' Jonathan Andal reposted by several Facebook pages, wheelchair user Nelson Belo, a member of the advocacy group Life Haven, is seen trying the ramp while someone assists him. He said it was too steep that he couldn't use the ramp going up. Moreover, it's dangerous for people like him to use it going down.
Facebook page Rising Philippines, which shares news and public affairs updates, also helped bring the issue to light when its repost got over 160,000 reactions.
Several users poked fun at the ramp.
"From PWD to RIP," one user said, referring to "Rest in Peace."
"Parang mas gugustuhin na lang gumapang ng naka-wheelchair 'pag nakita niya 'to," another user said.
Others, meanwhile, were more serious and critical toward the MMDA.
"They should try it [first] themselves if kakayanin ba nila," one user said.
"Those who are involved in this design of epic proportions should be liable, and should reimburse the public for the funds wasted here," another user said, noting the design "lacks common sense."
