Philippines to host 2 WTA tournaments in 2027
It's official: The Philippines will host not just one but two WTA tournaments in 2027.
There will be the WTA 125, for its second run in Manila, in January 2027 and, for the first time, the WTA 250 in late 2027.
On Thursday, Oct. 1, Philippine Tennis Association secretary general John Rey Tiangco and board member Dyan Castillejo confirmed the news in a video message posted on PHILTA's Facebook page.
"We're happy to announce and confirm, late last night, we threshed out some details with the franchise holder of WTA 250. We're going to have WTA 250 next year, 2027," Tiangco said.
The tournament will take place "end of October, first week of November," Castillejo said. This will not replace the WTA 125, Tiangco clarified.
"We will still have the WTA 125 in January," he said, with Castillejo adding it would be in the second week of the Australian Open.
"So even now, we'd like to invite all the international players, hopefully, to put the Philippines in your calendar," said Castillejo. "The Philippines is very excited to be hosting you again."
A WTA 250 is an international-level tournament category in professional women's tennis where the singles champion earns 250 ranking points, per WTA.
"The tournament is such a big boost to our local athletes also who have a chance to compete against the world's best in tennis," Castillejo said.
PHILTA will be releasing more details in the coming days.
