A man from California got killed in a car crash after trying to help a group of ducks cross the street.

In a press release, the Rocklin Police Department (RPD) said the man, identified as Casey Rivara, parked his vehicle at the intersection of Park Drive and Stanford Ranch Boulevard on May 18. Rivara reportedly assisted the ducks he saw at the intersection.

But a teenage driver headed eastbound on Stanford Ranch Boulevard struck Rivara who was in the roadway, the RPD said.

The driver remained in the area, but the man died at the scene even as emergency first responders arrived.

No arrest was made, the RPD noted, and the incident is still under investigation.

Rivara's family, meanwhile, set up a GoFundMe fundraiser for him according to PEOPLE.

Tracey Rivara, Casey's aunt, said he was driving his children home after the kids' swim practice "when they saw a mama duck and ducklings struggling to cross a busy intersection."

"Casey was the kindest, most amazing husband and father," Tracey said. "Even his last act in this world was a sign of his compassion. The family is trying to figure out how to recover and keep going after this immense loss."

Casey is survived by his wife Angel and two children aged 6 and 11.
