A 63-year-old woman from Utah, whose left leg was amputated after her son’s pit bulls and pups attacked her, died a week after the incident.

According to a report by PEOPLE Magazine, the woman was attacked by two adult pit bulls and their five puppies in her backyard last Oct. 31 for unknown reasons, sustaining critical injuries to her face, hands, and legs.

Her family confirmed to the police that she died in the hospital while recovering.

"We feel so badly for this family and we are so saddened by the passing of the victim of this tragic attack," said Taylorsville Police Chief Brady Cottam.

Authorities said that the woman called 911 "as the attack was happening." Upon arriving at the scene, the dogs also showed aggression toward them. They had to deploy pepper spray to drive the dogs away and allow paramedics to respond.

"From there, they were able to get the dogs away from the woman, containing them in a group along the opposite fence,” the police recalled.

The son surrendered his dogs to a shelter, and they were put down on the heels of the incident.

One of the dogs was also “fatally shot” on sight at the scene after breaking loose from the backyard, PEOPLE reported.

The woman’s family thanked authorities for trying to help.
