US influencer Kelly Hopton-Jones accidentally runs over toddler son with car
American parenting influencer Kelly Hopton-Jones shared on social media how she accidentally ran over her toddler son with her car.
In an Instagram post on April 16, Hopton-Jones wrote how Wednesday, April 15 was "the worst day of our lives," per a report from PEOPLE after the accident that injured her 23-month-old son Henry.
The content creator, who is a mother of two, wrote about how what-if scenarios continue to plague her.
"I can't even let my brain fully go to how different this situation could be right now," she wrote on Instagram. "If the morning had looked different. If [husband Brian] had gone to work like he normally would have, both kids would have been safely in their car seats."
"Why weren't we holding him? Why didn't I double-check before pulling out," she wrote.
Hopton-Jones narrated the incident on her post. She was about to take her daughter Lily for donuts before Lily's dance performance while her husband Brian was staying home with Henry. They all planned to meet at the performance.
"[Brian] helped Lily into the car and was waving goodbye between our car and Henry, who was in the garage. In a matter of seconds, our son was run over by our car. I was driving," Hopton-Jones wrote.
Neighbors took Lily in while Hopton-Jones and her husband rushed Henry to the emergency room.
The toddler underwent leg, chest, and neck x-rays, which all turned out to be normal. A CT scan showed no injury to the organs or spine. Likewise, a neurological exam detected no signs of a head injury or impairment. However, there were fractures on the child's pelvis and a few abrasions.
"What stays with me is the doctor saying: 'He is hurt, but this is something he can recover from,'" Hopton-Jones wrote. "A true miracle."
She added that the family is sad and still in shock, but otherwise "incredibly grateful."
The influencer then wrote one non-negotiable rule: to hold young children's hands when they are around vehicles.
"Do not assume they know or will stay where you last saw them," she added. "Even when you are not distracted. Even when you are not rushing. It can still happen in the blink of an eye."
She ended her Instagram carousel with a shot of her son on his hospital bed, writing, "We are holding him a little tighter tonight."
