Athlete dislocates shoulder while celebrating bronze victory at 2024 Paris Olympics
An athlete who won bronze at the 2024 Paris Olympics dislocated his shoulder in a freak accident moments after his victory.
Multiple media outlets like The Standard and Metro UK reported that Adil Osmanov, 24, had just defeated Italy's Manuel Lombardo in the men's -73 kg class in Judo when the incident happened.
A video showed Osmanov, mouth agape, jumping for joy and raising his arms as his final score was announced. He moved his right arm as he was still in a celebratory mood. That was when the pleasure apparently turned to pain, as he immediately grabbed his arm and curled up on the ground.
Nevertheless, Osmanov received well wishes from his home country.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu on X shared a photo of Osmanov following his victory.
"Another bronze medal for Moldova!" Sandu said. "Congratulations to our judoist Adil Osmanov for the impressive performance at the Olympics. Your achievement is a victory for us all."
Moldovan Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu also commended Osmanov for his feat, according to The Standard.
"Our sportspeople in judo show extraordinary performances at the Paris Olympic Games. The second bronze medal for Moldova, at judo,” Grosu is quoted as saying. "Excellent, Adil Osmanov. Your work and perseverance brought us pride and happiness. Come on, Moldova."
According to his profile on the Olympics website, Osmanov was born in Moscow. He has a degree in business administration from Moldova State University. His father later recommended that he try judo.
He started practicing the sport in Moscow, Russia in 2011 and has trained in the Moldovan capital Chisinau since 2017. His bronze feat marked his debut outing at the Olympics.
