2024 Paris Olympics: Carlos Yulo finishes 12th in men's all-around artistic gymnastics
Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo had a 12th place finish in the all-around finals of the men's artistic gymnastics, one of his three campaigns at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Yulo, 24, scored a total of 83.032 points during the match on July 31, Manila time.
He had a good start in pommel horse but lost his balance and fell to the mat, ending up in last place with a score of 11.900. It's over a point lower than his qualification round performance of 13.006 points.
Yulo worked his way up in the standings. He tallied 13.933 points in still rings and then 14.766 points in vault, his pet event. He got 14.500 points in parallel bars, 13.600 in horizontal bars, and 14.333 points in floor exercise, his other pet event.
Japan's Shinnosuke Oka won the gold after getting 86.832 points. China's Boheng Zhang and Ruoteng Xiao won silver and bronze, respectively.
Though Yulo missed the podium finish, it was a huge improvement from his 2020 Tokyo Olympics campaign, when he settled at 47th place.
'Masaya ako sa naging resulta'
In an interview with One Sports after the match, Yulo said he gave everything in the event. "Kahit anuman ang mangyari, kung anuman ang maging resulta, magiging masaya ako," he said. "Ganoon ang mindset ko pagpasok."
He said he maintained a positive attitude and mistakes should not discourage him. "Nagkamali man, ang dami kong natutunan," he said, adding it was a great feeling to be in the all-around finals.
"Super grateful na healthy ako, walang masamang nangyari sa akin," he added.
As for his mistakes in the competition, Yulo said he has no regrets and has moved on, ready for his other two appearances.
"Binigay ko ang buong puso ko, binigay ko ang best ko," he said. "Masaya ako sa naging resulta."
Yulo will return for the floor exercise finals on Aug. 3 and the vault finals on Aug. 4.
