Attention, motorists: Some portions of Mindanao Avenue in Quezon City will be closed off to vehicles as construction of the Tandang Sora Station of the Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) begins.

The road closure begins on Jan. 12 and is expected to last until 2028.

"The Tandang Sora Station Box will be constructed beneath Mindanao Ave. To be able to do so the Department of Public Works and Highways has to divert traffic in both south and northbound directions," Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Romando Artes said.

He also said that he doesn't think the closure of the lanes would affect traffic "so much."

"If ever (there will be an effect), it will be very minimal since [the contractor has] widened the road to compensate for the closed sections," Artes continued.

According to Antonio Aganon Jr., the chief engineer and civil deputy manager of Shimizu-Fujita-Takenaka-EEI Joint Venture, the private contractor of the MMSP, an estimated 100,000 vehicles use the southbound lane of Mindanao Ave. while 70,000 use the northbound lane.

LED screens will be installed to assist motorists along Mindanao Ave.

The station is the third to be constructed, after the North Avenue and Quirino Highway ones.

The Metro Manila Subway is a 33-kilometer project with 17 stations connecting Valenzuela to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 in Pasay. It's projected to serve up to 519,000 passengers daily and connect to the LRT-1, MRT-3, and MRT-7 lines.

The project is expected to be finished by 2029.
