A Chinese teacher is facing online backlash after slapping a student and threatening to throw him out a third-story window. The incident reportedly occurred after the student sprayed the teacher with a water gun.

South China Morning Post reported that 10-year-old Ranran sprayed his math teacher with a water gun because he hadn't received a confectionery reward for good behavior that day.

The 59-year-old teacher, surnamed Lin, reprimanded him in an office and pretended to throw him outside a corridor window, which was caught on surveillance camera.

Lin put the boy down but then grabbed his collar as he left.

Later, Ranran's father, Chen, noticed marks and swelling on his son's face and body when the boy arrived home.

“My son told me Lin slapped him several times. I confronted Lin the next day, but he denied it,” said Chen, who reported the incident to the local Education Bureau and the police.

On May 18, authorities confirmed Lin endangered Ranran's safety through improper punishment. Lin apologized to the boy and his parents, and then received a formal reprimand and administrative detention.

He later stated in a mainland media interview that he never intended to cause harm.

“I have been teaching for 40 years and always treat my students like my own children. I never expected this to happen,” he said.

According to Chen, Ranran's injuries have healed, but the boy now shows a reluctance to attend school and has developed a fear of his teachers.

The incident quickly gained massive attention on Chinese social media. Many condemned the teacher's actions, saying that the teacher should "learn to control his emotions." However, others also pointed blame at the student, with another netizen saying, "spraying water at the teacher was disrespectful" and that parents "have a responsibility to educate their children."

An investigation by the Rui'an Municipal Education Bureau proved the allegations against Lin, the bureau confirmed in a statement.

A case has been filed against him by the public security department. Lin is also detained.
