Stop the plane: Man who missed flight enters airport runway in a bid to prevent plane takeoff

Published Mar 07, 2025 1:58 pm

A passenger who was late for his flight walked onto the airport runway in a bid to stop the plane from taking off.

Daily Mail reported that the unidentified man from Chile, 29, ran toward a LATAM Airlines jet at El Tepual International Airport in the city of Puerto Montt on March 3, Monday.

He was headed to the city of Concepción via a one-hour flight.

He waved at the plane trying to get the pilots' attention so he could still be allowed inside.

An airport worker then rushed toward the man, who kept on waving to the plane.

Security staff eventually escorted him away.

The man was arrested and is scheduled to appear before a judge on March 11, Tuesday. It wasn't immediately clear what charges he's facing.

Puerto Montt Mayor Rodrigo Wainraihgt criticized airport security, questioning why the man was able to get to the tarmac in the first place.

"It certainly also leads us to see what policies are being taken at the airport," Wainraihgt is quoted as saying.

It wasn't the passenger's first legal trouble. He has previously been arrested for threats and thefts, according to local news outlet BioBioChile.
