A 14-month-old baby was pronounced dead after her grandmother accidentally left her in a hot car, reports said.

According to Suffolk County police, the 54-year-old grandmother forgot to drop off her granddaughter, who was sitting in the backseat, at a daycare center in Long Island on Monday and went off to work.

After eight hours, she went to pick up the little girl at the daycare but realized that "she had left the child in her vehicle."

The child was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead.

Investigation is underway and no criminal charges have been filed against the grandma.

The girl's family held a candlelight vigil the following evening.

"I know you’re going to be my guardian angel and I love you until we meet again," her mother Jessica Watkins said. "I’m so defeated. I don’t know how to do this."

A GoFundMe page has been set up on behalf of Jessica. The funds will be used for funeral costs and personal expenses.

"Her Babygirl was also my Goddaughter. And it is on behalf of and with permission from Jessica, that I am asking and reaching out to family and friends during this time to help with funeral costs, and to help Jessica with her personal expenses due to her going be out of work, in any way that could make this tragedy a little easier," wrote Jessica's friend, Derrick Rountree.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, about 53 percent of hot car deaths happen because someone forgets a child in a car and more than half of the deaths are under two years old.
