LOOK: Manila gets new park for senior citizens and pets
Manila just got a new hangout spot, and it’s designed to make sure both senior citizens and their furry companions have a place to enjoy the outdoors!
During its inauguration ceremony, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Chairman Romando Artes, Budget Secretary Kim Robert De Leon, and Manila Mayor Isko Moreno officially opened the Senior Citizens’ Park and Pet Park in Pandacan to the public.
Located at Plaza Azul, the nearly one-hectare park was once a neglected space filled with debris and waste. However, through a partnership between the MMDA and the Manila city government, the space was rehabilitated and equipped with a variety of recreational facilities and spots.
"Sa mga mahilig sa aso, pet lover, pusa-aso, welcome po kayo sa Manila. Dati, tao lang ang welcome. Ngayon, pati na hayop. Because this is a very unique concept of local government and national government—create an open green space for human and for our pets," Moreno said.
Visitors can explore the sunken garden, while fur parents can bring their pets to run free in the dedicated pet park. Kids can burn off some energy at the children’s playground—complete with slides, monkey bars, and plenty of space to climb—while fitness enthusiasts can squeeze in a workout at the outdoor fitness area, featuring built-in bodyweight exercise equipment.
For those who prefer a more laid-back day, there's an alfresco space and an activity area where visitors can hang out.
The park also has a croquet area for some leisurely recreation and a senior citizens’ pavilion where older Manileños can relax and socialize.
The project is part of the Metro Manila Green Green Green initiative, which aims to create more accessible and sustainable public spaces in the city.
