At least one Filipino has been confirmed dead following the devastating fire that consumed several high-rise buildings in Hong Kong's Tai Po District.

In an advisory, the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong assured that they are presently continuing their on-the-ground operations to check the welfare of and assist overseas Filipino workers affected by the Tai Po fire incident.

"The Consulate General mobile teams have confirmed 79 safe and accounted for Filipino nationals, one injured, and 12 left for verification," they stated.

"Sadly, one Filipino has been confirmed to have lost her life due to the tragic disaster," they added.

In a separate statement, they offered their heartfelt condolences to the family of the Filipina who passed away in the fire.

"Far from her native home, she had made innumerable sacrifices to provide a better life for her family. The Consulate General extends our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones at this trying time. May she rest in peace," they said.

Early Friday, Nov. 28, authorities said the fire had been contained to four of the sprawling apartment complex's almost 2,000 units, well over 24 hours after the blaze broke out in the eight-building complex.

Among the casualties were 12 firefighters.

Authorities have begun investigating what sparked the blaze, including the presence of bamboo scaffolding and plastic mesh wrapped around the structures as part of a major renovation.

It is Hong Kong's deadliest fire since 1948, when an explosion followed by a fire killed 135 people.

Hong Kong has also begun a three-day mourning period on Nov. 29 for the 128 people killed.
