'Di kayo magkaka apo:' Siblings greet their parents happy anniversary with a revelation cake
From dedication cake to revelation cake.
A group of siblings decided to make their parents' 24th anniversary a little spicy with the confession that they don't plan to give them grandchildren. At least, not yet.
Shared by netizen Alek Mangasar in the Facebook group What's your ulam, pare?, she offered her parents a cake to address the statements that they wanted a grandchild when they’re older.
"Happy Anniversary! Di na ulit malalahian," Alek captioned along with a photo of a chocolate cake with the vanilla icing words: "Di kayo magkaka apo samin."
The post has garnered 14,000 reactions and over a thousand comments.
"Honestly mas focus (sic) kami sa personal goals namin like doing well in school, getting promoted, supporting our parents’ endeavors and to be financially stable and independent muna po bago pa yung building our own families or even having a child!" Alek shared with PhilSTAR L!fe on what prompted them to give the cake.
"It never really passed our mind kahit nasa twenties na kami ng ate ko and my brother at 16."
Luckily, their parents were good sports about the revelation cake: "Our parents support that thinking naman, and always reminds us to be successful first," Alek said.
In a video shared by Alek, her mom can be seen opening the box and reading the cake out loud.
"Parang sira naman 'to, ba't may ganon pa!" their mother quipped.
Alek and her siblings wouldn't be the first members of the Gen-Z and Millennial generation choosing to wait or completely opt out of having kids.
A 2020 study by global intelligence company Morning Consult found that with the COVID-19 pandemic, financial constraints, and environmental issues play a huge part in younger adults choosing to delay the decision.
In a similar wave, actress Nadine Lustre shared that she has yet to be in the right mindset to have kids because of “everything that has been going on, or just me trying to be aware or trying to understand what it is that’s happening around me.”
The 28-year-old also shared that if she were to have kids, she would opt for adoption.
