Miss World 2021 coronation temporarily postponed, to be rescheduled ‘within 90 days’
Hours before its coronation night, the Miss World Organization announced that the 2021 pageant has been temporarily postponed.
The Miss World Organization announced on the pageant’s Facebook page that the coronation will be rescheduled within the next 90 days, citing health and safety concerns caused by COVID-19.
“Additional safety measures were implemented in the best interest of the contestants, production team, and spectators, understanding the event increased risks on the stage and in the dressing room,” the statement read.
However, the organization decided to postpone the pageant’s coronation after 17 of its candidates and technical personnel tested positive for COVID-19 from the initial seven “isolated” cases that were reported.
“The next step according to the medical experts is immediate quarantine, pending observation, and further testing according to best practices in situations like this,” the statement added.
According to the Miss World Organization, the contestants and staff will be allowed to return to their home countries once they’re cleared by health officials and advisors.
The 70th edition of the pageant was supposed to be held at the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum in San Juan, Puerto Rico. As of this writing, there are no additional details on whether the location will be changed or not.
The Miss World 2021 coronation was supposed to be held on Friday, Dec. 17 (Philippine Standard Time).
Tracy Maureen Perez, who was crowned as Miss World Philippines in October 2021, will represent the Philippines in the pageant.
The recent edition of the pageant was held in 2019. Toni-Ann Singh of Jamaica is the current Miss World titleholder.
