MMDA to open shower rooms for cyclists on March 17

Attention, cyclists! The Metro Manila Development Authority will open shower rooms that bike commuters can use this March.

MMDA General Manager Nicolas Torre III announced that the MMDA shower rooms for cyclists will open on March 17, with an inaugural ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8 a.m. at MMDA Motorcycle Riding Academy, Meralco Avenue corner Julia Vargas Ave, Pasig City.

The facility features eight cubicles to accommodate cyclists and walkers who need a place to freshen up before work.

The initiative is part of efforts to make cities more friendly to active transport, according to Torre, who has been advocating bike-to-work as a transportation alternative.

"We hope that this small initiative can serve as an example for other offices and institutions to also provide end-of-trip facilities for active mobility users," he said.

In February, Torre biked more than 23 kilometers to promote the bike-to-work campaign. He also urged government offices to support cycling employees by providing essential facilities such as showers.

Cycling to work has surfaced as a budget-friendly option to get around Metro Manila amid rising fuel prices triggered by the Middle East conflict.

According to The Philippine STAR, diesel prices are expected to increase by up to P22.30 per liter in the coming week, while gasoline is seen going up to P17 per liter.
