Woman dies after falling into manhole in New York
A woman died after plunging into an uncovered manhole in New York.
According to a report by PEOPLE Magazine, authorities said the woman stepped out of her car after parking and immediately fell 10 feet down the maintenance hole on Fifth Avenue.
The New York Police Department, which responded to the emergency call, found the woman down the hole unconscious and unresponsive before midnight on Monday, May 18.
The woman has been identified as Donike Gocaj, 56.
She was brought to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead later on.
Per the NYC Environmental Protection, the manhole is owned by the utility company, Con Edison, which said that the cover was dislodged by a truck based on CCTV footage.
"Approximately 12 minutes later, the person involved in the incident parked her car nearby," Con Edison said in a statement. "We are reviewing the details, and while this is a rare occurrence, manhole covers can get displaced by heavy vehicles. Our thoughts remain with her family, and safety remains our top priority."
Gocaj was survived by her son, daughter, and two grandchildren, according to ABC7.
