Dubai princess announces divorce from husband on Instagram
Sheikha Mahra bint Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, daughter of Dubai’s ruler, appeared to have announced her divorce from her husband via Instagram.
The princess’ verified Instagram account posted a message on Wednesday, July 17 announcing the couple's split.
“Dear Husband, as you are occupied with other companions, I hereby declare our divorce. I divorce you, I divorce you, and I divorce you,” the post read.
The princess seemingly used triple talaq, a centuries-old practice of Islamic divorce, where the man can end the marriage by pronouncing “talaq” three times. This practice has been banned in many countries, such as Bangladesh, Egypt, and Pakistan.
She ended the brief statement with, "Take care. Your ex-wife."
All her images with her husband are no longer visible in her Instagram feed. Sheikh Mana, her ex-husband, also removed her images from his account.
Her followers expressed their support in the post’s comments section.
“When a strong woman knows her worth. [M]ashallah,” a user wrote.
“I find it empowering when a woman recognizes her worth and confidently stands her ground,” another one commented.
Emirati influencer and model Mahra Lutfi also wrote, “I’m always here for you.”
Sheikha Mahra and Sheikh Mana tied the knot in a lavish wedding in April 2023. They welcomed their first child, a daughter named Mahra, in May.
The Dubai government and the UAE Embassy in London have yet to respond for comment, as per the BBC News report.
