Taylor Swift endorses Kamala Harris after US presidential debate
Taylor Swift is endorsing US Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 elections.
In an Instagram post, the Grammy award-winning artist said that as a voter, she makes sure "to watch and read everything I can about their (a candidate's) proposed policies and plans for this country," and so she tuned in to the presidential debate between Harris and former president Donald Trump.
"Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight. If you haven’t already, now is a great time to do your research on the issues at hand and the stances these candidates take on the topics that matter to you the most. As a voter, I make sure to watch and read everything I can about their proposed policies and plans for this country," her statement started.
She also addressed the issue of an AI version of herself "falsely endorsing Donald Trump’s presidential run" posted on his website.
"It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth," Swift continued.
Swift then announced that she would be voting for Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 US Presidential Election. She noted that Harris is a strong advocate for certain social or political issues that she believes are important.
"I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos," the Fearless singer explained.
Likewise, she was also "heartened and impressed" by Walz, "who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades."
"I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make," Swift noted.
Swift is reminding everyone, especially first-time voters, to register and vote early. She shared a link to where to register and find early voting dates in her Instagram stories.
Swift signed her post, "Childless Cat Lady," a reference to Sen. JD Vance, Trump's running mate, who said that America is being run “by a bunch of childless cat ladies, who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made.”
Swift has previously tried to stay out of politics, hoping not to isolate her audience. However, she made her political debut in 2018 when she backed Phil Bredesen in the Senate race. She also endorsed Joe Biden for president in 2020.
Harris and Trump on Wednesday (PH time) faced their first presidential debate in Philadelphia, two months before the elections.
