Through the collaboration of the University of the Philippines Medical Alumni Foundation Inc. (UPMAFI) and the Henry Sy Foundation Inc. (HSFI), the University of the Philippines, the country’s premier higher learning institution, recently opened the doors of the UP College of Medicine (UPCM) Henry Sy Sr Hall.
In its role as one of the country’s center of collaborative research for medical students, leaders of HSFI, UPMAFI, and supporters of UP Manila attended the building’s turnover ceremony last November.
Propelling research-based education
As HSFI, UPMAFI, and UP Manila marked the opening of the new building, they aim for this collaborative endeavor to strengthen the country’s healthcare and medical capabilities.
With this, UPCM’s Henry Sy Sr Hall rises at the UP-Manila complex. With a spacious 9,900 square-meter floor area, each of its rooms is equipped with facilities that encourage future physicians to engage in collaborative research and pursue dual and higher research-based degrees.
The 11-story building includes a patient safety center, two clinical simulation wings, two theaters, 42 classrooms designated for the new programs of UPCM, three board rooms, an alumni lounge, a special event hall, and two multi-purpose halls.
In 2019, UP alumni, their families, and supporters of UP Manila came together to aid in the construction of the building. To carry on the culture of excellence in the field of medicine, HSFI donated P300 million to the UPMAFI to support the cost of construction of the said building as it stays true to its mission of driving Philippine social development by supporting Filipino youth through extending grants to educational institutions.
The HSFI is a non-stock, non-profit organization inspired by SM founder Henry Sy, Sr.’s desire to aid educational institutions to drive Philippine social development. Its projects are undertaken in partnership with the SM group and its foundations to honor the SM founder by supporting educational institutions in promoting academic excellence as a key to a brighter future for the youth.
Through the years, the foundation established and supported several academic infrastructures, such as the Henry Sy Sr. Primary School Building in Xavier School, Nuvali Laguna; Henry Sy Sr. Innovation Center in Miriam College, Quezon City; NU Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna; NU Nazareth School in Manila; and a Henry Sy Sr. Hall each at Immaculate Conception Academy, San Juan City, and Assumption College.
