Cebu town implements total cellphone ban in schools
A town in Cebu has begun enforcing a total ban on mobile phones in schools.
Dumanjug mayor Gungun Gica issued the directive to schools regarding phone use in a Facebook post, saying it's effective starting Monday, June 29.
"No, in Dumanjug, it is a total ban. There are no phones allowed in school," he wrote.
"If a student brings a phone, it will be confiscated and only returned at the end of the school year. If you do not wish to follow this policy, you have the option to transfer your children to another municipality," he added.
Gica said he wants children "to read, study, and interact with their classmates."
"At home, we expect parents to talk to their children, follow up on what they learned in school, and encourage healthy relationships between siblings and parents," he continued.
"We want our kids to read, study, and interact with their classmates. At home, we expect parents to talk to their children, follow up on what they learned in school, and encourage healthy relationships between siblings and parents," his statement concluded.
In a separate Facebook post, the mayor stressed that the move was "not for show, but because the current academic standing of our children is truly alarming. We are falling behind, and we need to catch up."
Gica added that Dumanjug schools will further promote value formation and bible reading, and hold more seminars for teachers and parents moving forward.
