Tourist burns down $112,000 vacation villa in Bali trying to chase away a spider: reports
A tourist on vacation in Bali reportedly set a $112,000 (P7 million) villa on fire after trying to get rid of a spider he spotted in the bathroom.
According to local outlet The Bali Sun, Gaorap Rana, a 45-year-old tourist from Nepal, allegedly lit a piece of paper to scare away a spider he spotted in the bathroom but left the burning paper unattended while vacationing in a villa in North Kuta in Bali.
“After burning the paper, the victim left the bathroom and went to the work room. The burning paper was apparently carried by strong winds and caught the thatched roof,” Badung Police spokesperson, Ipda Ni Nyoman Yuni Eltari, told local outlet The Bali Times.
Per the outlet, the villa’s roof was made of highly flammable alang-alang grass and caught fire, while strong winds helped the flames spread quickly throughout the building.
In video footage shared by news.com.au, the said villa was seen with thick smoke rising from the building. A person was also seen spraying water on the flames with a hose, while the fire left the roof’s skeletal structure exposed.
Rana escaped the fire unharmed, but the blaze destroyed the villa and its contents, causing an estimated loss of Rp2 billion (around P7 million).
