Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) basketball player John Amores and his brother surrendered to authorities early Sept. 26 after a closed circuit television footage showed him shooting another man after a basketball game in Lumban, Laguna.

ABS-CBN News reported that Amores was seen disembarking from a motorcycle his 20-year-old brother was driving in Barangay Maytalang I at around 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25 before firing his gun at his basketball opponent and running away.

The bullet didn't hit the victim.

Bob Louis Ordiz, Lumban police chief, said Amores was playing basketball with the victim in Barangay Salac and they had a heated argument.

"Nagkaroon ng dayo sa Barangay Salac, tapos may tawag na hindi napàgkasunduan," Ordiz said, adding Amores and the man challenged each other to a fistfight before each of them left.

Ordiz said they saw each other again in Maytalang I.

A resident told GMA News that Amores and the man got agitated but were eventually pacified.

"Hindi naman nagkalapatan. Siguro nagkagirian lang," another witness said. "Pagkailang minuto, naawat. Akala ko tapos na."

According to Ordiz, "Naghamunan ulit ng another suntukan then si John Amores may dala ng baril at pinaputukan ang victim."

Police tried chasing Amores and his brother before they surrendered at 1 a.m.

He allegedly threw away the gun he had fired.

They're set to undergo inquest proceedings over attempted murder charges.

Amores, who played for Jose Rizal University during his college days, was banned from the National Collegiate Athletics Association in 2022 after punching four players from De La Salle-College of St. Benilde during a game.

Two players filed a complaint against Amores before the San Juan City Prosecutor's Office.

Nevertheless, NorthPort Batang Pier picked Amores during the 2023 PBA Rookie Draft.
