Philippine schools experience difficulties accessing their websites
Having trouble accessing your school's website? It appears that you're not the only one as several universities in the Philippines have reported technical problems with their websites that use the domain "edu.ph" on Jan. 24.
In a statement, the University of the Philippines' (UP) Information Technology Development Center said that there "may be issues with accessing websites and online services under the edu.ph domain, which includes UP System and CU websites."
They added that there is also an issue with the Philippine Network Foundation (PHNet), which manages all edu.ph domain names.
The University of Santo Tomas is also experiencing the same problem. They assured students that they are closely working with PHNet to resolve it and that their online systems are "intact and will be made available once the providers address the issue."
"In the meantime, the public is advised to connect with us via social media or official email channels for immediate concerns," they added.
The cause is still unclear, but the University of East said in a statement that the issue depends on the type of internet service, saying "users on Globe or Smart networks may experience difficulty in accessing" their online systems.
Other schools that have been affected include Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Lyceum of the Philippines University Manila, Rizal Technological University, Universidad de Manila, Our Lady of Fatima University, Mapua Malayan Digital College, Manila Central University, San Sebastian College, Occidental Mindoro State College, San Beda College Alabang, Southern Luzon State University, Cebu Technological University, Visayan State University, University of Caloocan City, Cagayan State University, Tarlac Agricultural University, among others.
Ateneo de Manila's website remains operational due to its ".edu" domain.
PhilSTAR L!fe has reached out to the Department of Information and Technology (DICT) for a comment but has yet to receive a response.
According to Cloudfare, this is a type of cyber attack where someone attempts to make a network or device unavailable to its users by "overwhelming or flooding a targeted machine with requests until normal traffic is unable to be processed."
