Alex Eala ends Miami Open run after falling to Karolina Muchova

Published Mar 24, 2026 9:55 am

Alex Eala bowed out of the Miami Open on Monday night (Philippine time) following her loss to World No. 14 Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic in the tournament's Round of 16.

Muchova, 29, dominated Eala, 20, through two sets—6-0, 6-2—displaying her experience and strategic variety. Fresh from her Qatar Open win in February, Muchova asserted control from the start with a 4-0 lead.

Eala, with her career-high World No. 29 spot, committed several unforced errors and couldn't hold serve, leaving Muchova to finish their first set with a triumphant sweep.

The Filipina tennis ace found a bit of her footing in the second set, finding her serve, but it appeared too little too late for Muchova's mastery on the court.

"It felt pretty good," Muchova said in her on-court interview following her win. "I mean, you get nervous here and there when it's going—I don't want to say easy, but when the score is in your favor, you have to be cautious."

Her win against Eala propelled the Czech player to her first Miami Open quarterfinal.

Eala, who won against Poland's Magda Linette in the Round of 32 just the day before, chose to look on the bright side.

"I'm still really happy about this week...of course, leaving the court today a little disappointed, which is normal. But overall, very happy with my performance this week," Eala said.

The crowd favorite made history at the 2025 Miami Open when she became the first Filipino to reach a WTA 1000 semifinal.
